Ever since I first heard Paul Young belt out "Wherever I lay my hat (That's my home)", I had been hooked on white British singers singing black music. Young's version remains a favourite. In fact, I prefer it over the Marvin Gaye version here.
As far as I was concerned, race didn't come into it. It was just another genre of music which I liked. To wit, blue-eyed soul. So spin the turntable with Simply Red, Paul Young, Wet Wet Wet, Lisa Stansfield, Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone ........ and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
